Au Pair Spain | Become an Au Pair in Spain | Smaller Earth UK

Live and have paid work abroad in Spain. Becoming an Au Pair in Spain is the perfect way to make new friends, learn or improve your Spanish language skills and experience the culture as a local.

Around 80% of the placements are in Madrid and Marbella which is a great base for you to fully immerse yourself in the Spanish culture. We also have families in other cities including Seville, Barcelona, Malaga, and Santander. Many young people have found Spain to be an exceptional place to live and learn a language that is already spoken by more than 400 million people around the world. The Au Pair program is a great opportunity to become part of a Spanish family, as they welcome you with open arms as a family member, not an employee.

Smaller Earth will match you to a host family eager to invite you in to their lives for 3 months or more. With all accommodation, meals and other perks included, you'll get a weekly allowance that will support your vibrant city lifestyle and social activities during your time off.

Work as a paid Au Pair
As an Au Pair in Spain you will work up to 30 hours per week. Your schedule is based on the family's needs and will differ with each placement. A usual day will be 5 to 6 hours of work. The week will most likely be 6 days of work with 1 day off or 5 days of work with 2 days off, depending on the hours worked each day. Au Pairs will watch the child(ren) for up to two evenings per week and you may be requested to extend your work schedule during school holidays and in that case your host family will pay you extra for the additional hours you work. This program has more structure than the summer program and allows the freedom and time to explore Spain and take a Spanish language course whilst you are there. The focus is really on getting the children to school and then helping them with their homework/English speaking for a few hours each evening. You therefore have most days free to take classes and really throw yourself in to Spanish life and your local community.
Roles and Responsibilities
Keep in mind that this cultural exchange program has been designed to ensure that Au Pairs have enough time to explore Spain and meet with friends! Au Pairs will never be asked to do substantial household chores because a majority of Host Families have a cleaner that can sometimes be a live-in staff member. Your tasks may include :
  • Childcare and assisting with English language skills
  • Light housework; such as helping prepare meals, doing some laundry and keeping your room tidy
  • Driving children to and from school, appointments and in some cases tutoring sessions.
Spanish Language Course
Want to improve your knowledge of Spanish, as well as experience the Spanish way of life? Well look no further. With this program you will be able to immerse yourself in the Spanish culture while also gaining a better understand of the language.

Matching you to a host family

We pride ourselves on ensuring that you are matched to the right host family.  All of our host families and Au Pairs have been carefully screened to ensure that we assure compatibility and sustainability in order to make your cultural exchange experience as effective and comfortable for both parties.  You may receive a telephone call or be asked to Skype with prospective host families so you can get to know one another better.

Our host families are really conscious that this is a cultural exchange program and want to ensure that you are integrated fully into their family life to provide you with the best possible experience. Remember that Spanish families are eager to learn more about your native language and culture and this is the main reason why they want to host an Au Pair.

Why Trust Us

We want everyones trip to be fun, enriching and most of all safe. Heading on an Au Pair programme with Smaller Earth you can rest assured that you'll be going in to a loving family that has been thoroughly vetted and interviewed.

We're official members of the International Au Pairs Association, which means we work at the very highest standards of Au Pair recruitment.

We ask each Au Pair to provide a minimum of two childcare references, a police background check issued within the last 6 months and a declaration of full health. We also ask all of our families to do the same. Our placement team also visit the family homes to ensure they are suitable, comfortable and safe to host international Au Pairs.

Smaller Earth along with our international Au Pair placement teams, provide 24/7 support for all of our Au Pairs. We ensure everyone is fully prepared for their trip with a comprehensive pre-departure guide, advice and orientation where applicable.

Do I need to speak Spanish?
No! Don't worry about being fluent in the language, we just ask that you get to grips with the basics before you go. Not only does this demonstrate to the family a willingness to learn but it also makes settling in that bit easier.
Do I get to choose where I go?
You can let us know if you have a location preference, but please note that this isn't guaranteed. We prefer to avoid matching Au Pairs and Host Families purely based on location; instead we try to match your interests, hobbies and experience.
Remember that you will have plenty of time to socialise on your time off and explore all that Spain has to offer. So, if you'd love to go to a different city for a weekend, you can get planning with your new Au Pair friends!
How does the payment work?
Once you're ready to commit, simply pay the £50 deposit to start work on your program documents. The balance of your fees is due only once your match with a Host Family has been confirmed.
Does the fee include flights?
The program fee does not include flights. However, you should be able to find cheap and reasonable flights with low budget airlines.
How will the family pay me my pocket money?
Families will usually pay you in cash. If you have another preferred way of being paid, this is something you can discuss with them in more detail once your match has been confirmed.
Matching Process
How does the matching process work?
You'll go in to matching once you've completed all of the required documents for us and these include things like a background check and references.
Please allow a minimum of 6 weeks to be matched, we like to have as long as possible to ensure we match you to the right family.nSmaller Earth will notify you each time a family has requested to interview you.
Interviews with families will take place over Skype and it's advisable you chat to them at least twice to ensure you feel comfortable and have asked them any questions you may have.
You may only Skype with one family before the match is confirmed, or it may several families - it's all perfectly normal and is different per Au Pair.
Do I get to speak to the family before I depart?
Absolutely! In fact we can't encourage this enough. Once you have been matched, it's a good idea to email or call the family a few times before you depart just to maintain regular contact.
How do I interview with familes?
Most interviews are conducted via Skype - so make sure you have a good internet connection and a webcam.
What happens if I don't get matched with a Host Family?
Hopefully this situation won't arise due to the screening of your application prior to paying your deposit. Smaller Earth have a lot of experience interviewing Au Pairs and we know what families look for.
We'll therefore only ask you to pay the deposit if we feel confident in securing you with a Host Family match. If, in the rare situation, you weren't to be matched, not to worry.
We can transfer your deposit over to any other program of your choice or you can simply delay your trip to any point in the future. Our endless deposit scheme means that your deposit is valid for life.
